A brawl involving dozens of migrants erupted Monday evening in an area between the port and the city center of Calais (Pas-de-Calais), making 11 light casualties, it was learned from the prefecture of the department Tuesday.C

Between 21:30 and 23:50, a few dozen Eritreans and Ethiopians fought for an unknown reason in the industrial zone known as "Dunes" in Calais, a spokesman for the prefecture told AFP.

The police, who have wiped stone, have used tear gas to disperse migrants, the source added. At 01:00, the district was still closed by a dozen vans of CRS, found a correspondent of the AFP.

The fight led to 11 light casualties, four of which were taken to the Calais hospital. A minor has been placed in police custody for spitting on a police officer, while 24 other minors have been sheltered in homes in France Terre d'Asile in Saint-Omer and Sangatte (Pas-de-Calais), Said the spokesman of the prefecture.

"We do not know the reason for the fight, but we can not leave so many people on the street and expect that it will go well, it creates tension that ends up exploding", denounces With AFP Gaƫl Manzi, local coordinator of Utopia 56, and witness of the facts.

The association distributes meals for about 250 migrants each night but feels that their number in the Calais region is much higher.
